National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, the longest day of the year, the summer solstice and a traditional time of celebration for many Indigenous people. Today we celebrate and learn more about the cultural diversity of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in this place we call Canada.

There are many things that we need to recognize and celebrate today, but honestly we need to recognize and celebrate Indigenous people in this country everyday.

We know from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that we have a lot of work to do.

Truth is something we must recognize in our hearts.

Reconciliation is something we must act upon, and live, in all of our day to day activities.

’Uy’ skweyul

Because the House of Commons adjourned a day early, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations on both Stz'uminus and Snuneymuxw territory.

Big thanks to the organizers and sponsors of these wonderful family-friendly events that were enjoyed by thousands of our community members today.
