Petition e-3330 to the House of Commons

Whereas:

  • The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its final report in 2015;

  • The Commission’s 94 Calls to Action require a comprehensive response if we hope to see reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and all Canadians;

  • Calls to Action #53 to 56 call for the establishment of a National Council for Reconciliation as an oversight body with both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members in order to “monitor, evaluate, and report annually to Parliament and the people of Canada's post-apology progress on reconciliation” to ensure government accountability; and

  • Canada urgently needs this Council to generate and maintain progress in the reconciliation process.

We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:

1. Take immediate action to establish a National Council of Reconciliation as called for in the final report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Calls to Action #53 to 56) “as an independent national oversight body with membership jointly appointed by the Government of Canada and national Aboriginal organizations and consisting of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members” to:

(i) monitor, evaluate and report annually to Parliament and the people of Canada on Canada’s progress in reconciliation to ensure government accountability; and

(ii) act as a catalyst for further action both by government and society at large.

2. Provide multi-year funding including the endowment of a National Reconciliation Trust;

3. Provide annual reports and any current data requested by the Council with specific information on the progress of reconciliation; and

4. Outline plans for advancing reconciliation in annual reports issued by the Prime Minister.
