PLEASE NOTE: The events starts about 25 minutes into this video.
On Wednesday June 10th, agricultural activist and urban farmer Chris Brown spoke with me about the realities of local food production on Vancouver Island. We discussed COVID-19 as well as challenges and opportunities for enhancing local food security.
Food security is an issue I have worked on previously, both at Nanaimo Foodshare and in my documentary film work. Last year, I produced Five Acres, which explores the history and significance of the Five Acre Farm in Harewood, a plot of land with a long history of producing local food.

So great to hear this very relevant discussion. Wonderful what Ladysmith is doing with food growing in public spaces.
I hope Nanaimo will follow their lead.
In terms of resources please also look at the Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association. We are university trained organic gardeners who volunteer our time to educate the public about gardening. See www.vimga org.
